Tinel’s Sign (a-c)

Other names for test: Hoffman-Tinel sign, nerve percussion test

Used to assess: Median, radial, and ulnar nerve pathology

Patient position: Sitting with elbow flexed

Clinician position: At patient’s side

Clinician’s stabilizing hand position: Supporting hand being tested

Clinician’s test hand position: Index or middle finger is used over carpal tunnel (median) (a) proximal to radial styloid process (radial) (b) or Guyon’s tunnel (ulnar) (c)

Action performed: Use index or middle finger to tap over nerve site

Positive result: Tingling or pain with tap on nerve

Accuracy: SN = .55 SP = .75 +LR = 3.61 −LR = .48
