Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

This is an excerpt from Essentials of Teaching Physical Education 2nd Edition With HKPropel Access, The by Stephen A. Mitchell & Jennifer L. Walton-Fisette.

CASEL defines social-emotional learning as “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning 2017). To engage in this process, CASEL (2017) developed a framework that includes five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making (see figure 4.1). Specific to physical education, SHAPE America (2019) created a document that aligns each of the five CASEL competencies with SHAPE America’s National Standards and GLOs (2014). In the following section a description of the five core competencies and connections to the National Standards for K-12 Physical Education will be provided to guide you on how you can provide SEL opportunities for your students.
