Star Student: Dr. Monique Butler

As a first-generation student, Dr. Monique Butler received her bachelor of science in kinesiology-movement science from the University of Michigan in 1997. Butler then received a doctor of medicine from Wayne State University and a master of business administration from the University of Tennessee.
Through her impressive career in medicine, she has ascended to the position of president of HCA Healthcare’s Graduate Medical Education. She is responsible for the enterprise-wide leadership qualities of strategy, quality, and operations, including the growth and development, program accreditation, and clinical performance of more than 300 residency and fellowship programs across 16 states and in 70 teaching hospitals. Nashville-based HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading providers of health care services, comprising 186 hospitals and approximately 2,400 ambulatory sites.
During her time as an undergraduate, she served as president of the Kinesiology Student Government, and she created the inaugural career fair for students in her senior year. “I wanted to ensure that students understood the role kinesiology plays in society.” A multitude of health care and physical activity organizations and graduate schools participated in the event.
Butler speaks highly of her undergraduate experience: “Kinesiology gave me access to a healthy lifestyle that is part of my life today. In addition to being a very solid platform and undergraduate degree for medical school, studying kinesiology has helped me understand the importance of wellness, fitness, and taking care of our bodies through preventative medicine.”
In honor of her mother, Dr. Butler created the Grant Foundation to improve health equity in the United States. The goal “is to help individuals like me, from humble beginnings, to be able to go to a university and matriculate to medical school.” She has partnered with the School of Kinesiology to develop the Pathfinders in Medicine program, which financially assists first-generation undergraduate students.
Dr. Butler is a master mentor who has established mentoring programs, such as Young Doctors of Detroit, for high school students from underrepresented populations who are interested in a career in medicine. Also, beyond mentoring those interested in careers in nursing, Butler mentors kinesiology students at the University of Michigan who aspire to careers in health care professions.
Dr. Butler is a kinesiology graduate who serves as a role model to any prospective student considering kinesiology and medicine in their education and lives.
