Byl served on the CIRA Ontario board of directors from 1996 to 2018, the last 15 years as president, where he promoted active participation and wellness in children through creative games and physical literacy. He was able to procure $125,000 in grants for CIRA Ontario to produce and lead workshops in daily physical activity through an English and French resource called, Everybody Move (2005) and Tout le Monde Bouge (2006). In recognition of his lasting contributions, CIRA Ontario established the annual John Byl Bursary Award, honouring a school with an exemplary intramural program.
Throughout his career, Byl has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for promoting physical activity across Canada and the Ontario Volunteer Service Award. He was inducted into the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Hall of Fame as a “Builder” and recognized in the Hamilton Sport Hero Banner Series. His work with organizations like Gopher Sport, Omnikin, and CIRA Ontario continues to impact educators and students nationwide.
Byl’s personal philosophy of play has shaped his professional trajectory. Immigrating to Canada from the Netherlands as a young child, he found solace and joy in play during recess and after-school games. These early experiences laid the foundation for his belief that play is essential to a healthy, well-rounded life. This belief has driven much of his work in promoting physical education that emphasizes inclusion, fun, and the development of lifelong wellness habits.
Despite significant personal health challenges, including a serious accident and cancer diagnosis, Byl remains resilient and committed to his mission of spreading the joy of play. He envisions a future where city streets are filled with children at play and continues to lead by example, choosing life, movement, and positivity at every turn. His passion for physical education and advocacy for play continue to impact communities across Canada and beyond. Byl’s life's work embodies a spirit of resilience, creativity, and a deep belief in the transformative power of physical activity for all.
