In volleyball, the little things often mean the difference between being good and being great. But bridging the gap between the two requires the patience, persistence, and insight that come with experience. The Volleyball Handbook provides access to that experience through the knowledge and teachings of one of volleyball’s foremost experts in both boys’ and girls’ play. In this practical guide, veteran coach Bob Miller goes beyond the fundamentals to give you a grasp on the finer points of the sport that are essential to winning championships.

Filled with practical, nuts-and-bolts information, each chapter is like a personal coaching clinic designed to help individuals and teams improve. Whether you’re learning to execute offensive and defensive techniques and tactics or organizing productive practices and game preparation, this insider’s guide will help ensure top-notch performances in matches and tournaments. And, because volleyball success hinges on a total team effort, you’ll benefit from a proven approach to creating a cohesive, winning attitude on the squad.

Prepare to perform like a champion every time you step on the court. The Volleyball Handbook will show you the same methods that Miller used to guide his teams to 950 wins and 7 state championship titles during his phenomenal coaching career.

Upon his 2002 retirement, Bob Miller had amassed a 950-150 (.864) record and 7 state championship titles in 55 seasons of coaching high school varsity boys’ (35 seasons) and girls’ (20 seasons) volleyball at North Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his alma mater. In 1994, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, an organization for which he is currently a second-term president. He is also a member of the North Allegheny School District Athletic Hall of Fame and is an adjunct member on the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Volleyball Steering Committee.

As a court coach, Miller has trained players at Penn State University Camps, Volleyball Express Camps at Juniata College, and the Youngstown State Team Camp, as well as Wooster High School in Ohio and Butler High School in Pennsylvania. He has also spoken as a clinician at a University of Pittsburgh clinic and made several presentations for the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association clinics. Miller was instrumental in establishing the first club program in Western Pennsylvania, called Willow Pond, where he was involved in coaching a 16-and-under boys’ team. He also coached the girls’ teams twice in the Keystone Games.

Miller currently volunteers with both boys’ and girls’ volleyball programs and works with a senior women’s team that captured its division title at the 2004 Pennsylvania Keystone Games while training for the Senior Olympics held in the summer of 2005. Miller’s daughter, Julie, and son, Brian, both played at Penn State University, where Julie currently serves as director of volleyball operations. Both were also assistant coaches at North Allegheny High School. Miller and his wife, Margaret, live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

"Bob Miller is a coaching legend in Pennsylvania. Certainly, a significant amount of everything we do with our volleyball teams is based on Coach Miller's philosophies. The Volleyball Handbook will allow readers to positively change the way they play or coach this wonderful game.”

- Larry Bock-- women’s volleyball coach, Juniata College

“Bob Miller is one of the premier high school volleyball coaches in the country, and he relates his many great ideas on how to maximize the performance of young athletes in The Volleyball Handbook. His philosophy is insightful and has proven to be very successful, and I would recommend this book to coaches and players alike who are serious about improvement.”

- Tom Peterson--, men’s volleyball coach, Brigham Young University
