Physical Literacy and all Abilities Enhanced Online Course
Physical Literacy and All Abilities will help teachers, coaches, and recreational leaders to understand physical literacy, implement quality programming, and encourage skill development by modifying various components of their programming to incorporate individual needs. This certification course provides an overview of a variety of disabilities across the spectrum of developmental, behavioral, sensory, and physical disabilities. Best practice strategies and scenarios are provided in order to apply the information and emphasize what is required to create an inclusive environment in physical education and physical activity programming.
Unit 1 provides an overview of physical literacy and its components and foundational information on the definitions of disability and inclusion. An emphasis is placed on the importance of ensuring all participants are provided a safe and supportive learning environment, regardless of ability.
Unit 2 provides guidance on facilitating an inclusive environment. Seven strategies for facilitating inclusion and behaviour management are explained, and suggestions for implementation are outlined. This unit will provide leaders with strategies to begin incorporating the needs of each learner into their programming.
Units 3 and 4 examine a variety of developmental, behavioural, sensory, and physical disabilities. Both units introduce adaption and modification strategies to ensure the needs of each participant are met in various physical education and physical activity settings.
Finally, the last unit applies the knowledge from the previous units and encourages the development of an inclusion action plan for programming.
This certification course provides an opportunity to review and apply learning by answering questions, solving tasks, and completing interactive activities. A PHE Canada certificate of completion will be provided upon successful completion.
Teachers (in-service and pre-service), coaches, and recreational leaders interested in advancing their knowledge and capacity to deliver safe and inclusive physical activity programming to children and young people of all abilities.
