The BASES Expert Statement on Mental Health Literacy in Elite Sport

You must log in to watch this webinar recording.

Date: 9th October 2019

Time: 15.00 BST

Research demonstrates that elite athletes are not immune to poor mental health which can adversely affect their health and performance. Despite the many reasons which may affect the mental health of elite athletes, few individuals seek professional help. Research also shows elite athletes have a poor understanding of mental health issues and are uncertain about where to seek support. Evidence-based strategies are needed to address the causes of poor mental health in elite sport and provide support in a systematic manner to those who need it. The aim of this statement is to review the available literature on mental health literacy (MHL) programmes in elite sport and provide guidance on future programme research and development.

Paul is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and a Senior Lecturer of Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Portsmouth. His research expertise lies within the promotion of mental health and well-being. Most recently, Paul was an expert panel member for the IOC consensus statement on mental health in elite athletes.
